Two great reasons to light and release sky lanterns: a late bank holiday and cheese rolling event. In May there are two public bank holidays at the beginning and end of the month. Both these days are traditionally taken off by many workers so they can have a relaxing and enjoyable day off. But that is not the only event scheduled for today. The Gloucestershire Cheese rolling festival is held each year on this day and many people from around the country flock to Cooper’s Hill in order to see this unique and fun spectacle. Over 15,000 people attended last year’s event and the occasion is seeing growing popularity. Steeped in tradition, most people do not want to see an end to this tradition. Unfortunately, this year’s event has been cancelled.
For those who have the day off because of the late bank holiday and were planning on attending the cheese rolling contest, you will have to make other plans this year. Because of the increasing popularity of the even and concerns for health and safety, the event has been cancelled for this year. Amid protest, though, talks are underway to make improvements to the event so it can be carried on as it has in the future. There are several different types of races all built around the premise of chasing after a wheel of cheese that is rolling down a hill. The winners in each event get the cheese.
If you are a supporter of the cheese rolling event, light and release a sky lantern to show your support and to make sure it comes back again next year. You can take a white cylindrical lanterns such as the one shown athttp://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/sky-lanterns/white-cylindrical-sky-lanterns/prod_10.html and personalize it with a message of support for cheese rolling. If people all over the UK do this, maybe it will show the town how popular and beloved the event is and will make the necessary changes and improvements so the event can return next year.
A great idea to show your support is to hold your own mini cheese rolling event in your own yard. Or, you can simply have a wine and cheese party. Complete the evening with a glowing display of sky lanterns so that the night sky is alight with the glow of many different flying lanterns. Use Mega Vube sky lanterns such as those found athttp://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/novelty-sky-lanterns/mega-cube-lanterns/prod_28.html to really make an impact statement.
Even if you don’t have a particular fondness for the cheese rolling event, it is still a bank holiday and time to let loose a bit. You have the day off, why not put it to good use. Have some friends and family over to watch sports, catch the latest movie or cook and socialize. There does not have to be a particular special occasion to take advantage of the fun of sky lanterns. Anytime you have a gathering of people you can increase the fun by using flying lanterns. Always have some on hand in case you have an event you want to use them for.
